Film Dosimetry for QA

Precision is the entire point of IMRT, IGRT, and VMAT. For 17 years film dosimetry has been the gold standard tool for the high resolution images that are the cornerstone of QA testing. Speed and efficiency are critical to a busy treatment center, but obtaining the most accurate dose analysis possible is the real responsibility.

 Vidar scanner interface

“RapidArc, Tomotherapy, VMAT You can’t QA these therapies without some kind of film - silver or radiochromic - you’d be crazy to rely on anything else. I would not want to commission or do my patient QA without RIT.”

Generic Image File Import

Great for Cyberknife Analysis! RIT imports generic JPEG, TIFF, and BITMAP image files from sources other than your Vidar Scanner giving you increased flexibility in your workflow to use RIT’s exclusive analysis routines.

Transparent Radiochromic Film

NEW in V5.3 - Upgraded Mathmagical™ Corrections
for EBT2 Film

  • Red/Blue corrections for thickness variation
  • Use with flatbed scanners
  • Scanner Non-uniformity Correction
  • Perfect for rotational therapies
“I lost my film processor. I’m using radiochromic film with RIT’s Radiochromic Film Uniformity Correction*. My results are as good as if I were using radiographic film.* I love the flexibility - it also accepts my generic TIFF, JPEG and BMP images.”

(“Vidar Scanner Control Center”) that allows for multiple film scanning, auto-naming, and auto-cropping, auto-flipping, and preview of scanned images. Diagnostics are now included in the “Vidar Scanner Control Center” under the Vidar Info button. This eliminates the need to run a separate application and automatically uploads scanner test results to the RIT FTP site for technical support.

Added to our interfaces with other Vidar Scanner models, we also interface with Vidar’s new Dosimetry Pro Advantage RED LED scanner. Recommended for EBT film, this new scanner is significantly faster and uses a long life Red LED.

A Mathmagical Solution for fibrous dosimetry film! *

RIT has developed a complex set of image processing algorithms to correct for the non-uniformities in each piece of film. Use this routine to correct for fiber scatter and scanner roller issues.

*In all cases, the application of the new RIT background correction algorithm improved the results of radiochromic film. Using the correction, the percentage of pixels exceeding the gamma threshold dropped from 8.1% to 4.6%. IMRT QA results with the RIT background corrected radiochromic films were comparable to radiographic films.”

Changes in the film processor can result in large differences in the calibration curves. This routine *compensates for the causes of processor variation:

  • Temperature changes
  • Changes in chemicals
  • Oxidation of some of the chemicals
  • Number of films run per day
  • Replenishment rate of chemicals
  • Type of developer
  • Type of film - EDR2 is more sensitive to processor variations than XV

The Sensitometry routine uses the PTW SensiX sensitometer to automatically analyze the sensitometry strip according to FDA specifications, and plots a characteristic and gamma curve.

A two dimensional correction using 4 marks on the film that automatically calculates the correct pixel sizes in the scan and feed direction, then develops the correction. This must be done for each scanning resolution.
